Bio
Sara Tillema (she/her) is a fifth year PhD candidate in the Study of Religion, with a concentration in American Religious Cultures. Her primary area of study is American Evangelicalism and her dissertation research adopts a mixed-methods approach to examine the key features of former evangelicals in the United States, a population colloquially identified by many names: exvangelicals, post-evangelicals, unfundamentalists, recovering evangelicals and more. Her fieldwork includes ethnographic interviews with former evangelicals conducted since March 2024, in addition to textual analysis of former evangelical social media and publications.
