Designated Emphasis Program

Study of Religion students may choose to pursue an area of specialization called a "Designated Emphasis" in any one of the D.E.s offered at UC Davis.   Similar to a minor for undergrads, the Designated Emphasis is awarded in conjunction with the Ph.D. degree and is signified by a transcript designation; for example, "Ph.D. in the Study of Religion with a Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory."  For more general information about DEs, please see the graduate studies website.

Please see the individual DE's website for additional information on program requirements. Students must declare their D.E. formally using a graduate studies form submitted at least 1 quarter before the Qualifying Exam.  All courses must be completed for the D.E. in advance of sitting for the qualifying exam.
