Remembering Elizabeth Freeman

Prof. Elizabeth Freeman, Professor of English and Affiliated Faculty with GREL, passed away on Sunday, June 2, after a long struggle with cancer. She met her diagnosis with typical fierceness, courage and used it as an opportunity to advocate for early detection and testing. Even as she underwent treatment, she continued to write, publish, teach, mentor, and care for everyone in her orbit. Beth was an enthusiastic supporter of our graduate program and we will miss her wit, her compassion, and her loving wisdom. She is survived by her beautiful, brilliant son, Felix, who just graduated High School, her beloved partner, Candace Moore, and a circle of dear family and many many friends. We mourn this great loss to our campus community and send our heartfelt sympathies to her family. Duke University Press, with whom she had a long-standing relationship, has posted this moving farewell to her. A tribute and remembrance to Beth is being planned in the Bay Area by the family for July 2024. We will share that information as it becomes available.
